Three Walled Lake Consolidated Schools’ seniors named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists
Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is proud to announce that three students have been named semifinalists for the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship: Andrew Borden, Noah Nicholson and Vidya Vuyyuru.
Walled Lake Central senior Andrew Borden plans to double major in electrical engineering and computer science in college. He is a member of National Honor Society, in the marching and jazz bands, and a member of the Walled Lake Robotics team. Outside of school, Borden is a member of Boy Scout Troop 170 and is currently pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout.
“It was very surprising, but definitely a welcome surprise,” said Borden. “Being recognized reminds me of how special the support system is around me. I would not have achieved this if I hadn’t been pushed by my friends, my family, the people, and the activities I am in.”
“Andy is a kind and amazing human,” said Walled Lake Central counselor Amanda Swanson. “He should be very proud of his accomplishments both in and out of school. I have enjoyed working with him and his family and look forward to seeing where life takes him.”
Walled Lake Northern senior Noah Nicholson is considering studying computer science, cyber security, or dual majoring in both when he arrives at college in the fall. Nicholson is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, co-founder of the Computer Science Society, Green Club and plays on the Knights’ tennis team.
“It means a lot,” said Nicholson. “I put a lot of work in, and it’s really nice to see all the hard work pay off.”
“Noah is one of my most favorite students of all time,” said Catherine Savone, World Language Department Chair. “He is kind, sweet, empathetic, funny, quirky, super intelligent, and just an all-around do-good and loving kind soul.”
“Noah has a curious mind, and his contributions to our discussions are thoughtful and often insightful,” added English teacher Kevin La Plante. “He delves into the implications of ideas, and he supports his heady analysis with specific and poignant evidence. He has a warm demeanor and a cool sense of humor.”
Walled Lake Western senior Vidya Vuyyuru will pursue a degree in computer science in college. She’s a member of National Honor Society, DECA, the Get I.T. Club, Iasa, and founded Walled Lake Western’s Math Club. Vuyyuru is also works as the building’s technology intern.
“It’s thrilling to have my hard work be recognized,” said Vuyyuru. “I put a lot of work into it, so I am just really excited to have this opportunity.”
“We are incredibly proud of Vidya Vuyyuru for being named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist,” said Walled Lake Western principal Amy Pashak. “Her exceptional abilities and unwavering desire to challenge herself have earned her this prestigious opportunity, and we look forward to seeing her bright future unfold.”
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards nearly $28 million in scholarships each year. Finalists will be announced in the spring, then approximately half of those academically talented seniors will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
