1 to 1 Device Program

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is excited to offer students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to obtain a district supported Chromebook device for this school year and beyond. Walled Lake Consolidated Schools offers students the ability to bring their own device on a daily basis, or check out a district Chromebook. Students will have two choices; Bring your own device from home or sign up for a district-issued Chromebook.

WLCSD Chromebook Handbook

Walled Lake Consolidated School District students in Grades 6 through 12 access instructional materials on electronic devices. Students are expected to bring a fully charged computing device to school each day. For the best learning experience that provides access to all resources, the Information Technology Department recommends the use of Chromebooks.

To support this learning need, families may choose to participate in the District provided Chromebook program. The program provides students with a Chromebook, case, and charger for use at school and home. Advantages of participating in the program include:

  • Enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity in District
  • Increased support from District IT staff
  • Streamlined device repair

To participate in the program, families must complete a Chromebook Device Agreement and pay a $50.00 deposit. Additionally, families may purchase, annually, a technology protection plan.

Please note, District provided devices remain property of Walled Lake Consolidated School District. Use of the devices must be in accordance with the District’s Student Code of Conduct and Acceptable Use Policy. Families are responsible for the care and appropriate use of devices. Families are also responsible for repairs, other than those covered by the device’s warranty.

Successful Chromebook Learning Experience

For a successful Chromebook learning experience, follow these guidelines:

  • Charge the device fully every night.
  • Bring the device to school every day.
  • Printing is not available, students needing printing capabilities should contact their teacher.
  • Keep your work in Google Drive, this will prevent loss of school projects.
  • Personalize the device by adding music and photo files, do not put stickers on the device.
  • Shut down and restart the device regularly so that Chrome OS automatically updates.
  • Access approved software through the Chrome Web Store.

Chromebook Identification

Chromebooks are asset tagged and labeled. Chromebooks can be identified in the following ways:

  • Serial number
  • Asset tag

Destroying labels is prohibited. Doing so will void the deposit refund. Additionally, the device will not be eligible for service under a Technology Protection Plan.

Chromebook Care

Students are responsible for the general care of the provided device. General precautions that can help keep the device safe include:

  • Be careful when inserting and removing cords and cables into ports
  • Close the Chromebook prior to carrying it.
  • Preserve battery life by shutting down the device when not in use.
  • Use care when placing in a backpack or locker.
  • Prevent exposure to extreme temperature and direct sunlight.
  • Seal water bottles and lunch containers when placing them in your backpack.

Chromebook screens are sensitive to pressure. To prevent breakage, a padded carrying case is provided. If a screen needs to be cleaned, wipe gently with a dry microfiber cloth.

Chromebook Technical Support

Students in need of assistance should fill out a tech support form posted on the school website, accessible on Classlink, and linked below. Our team can help with:

  • Password resets
  • Account support
  • Assistance with online programs
  • System updates
  • Restoration to factory default
  • Coordination of offsite repair for physical damage

After filling out the form, the student should check his/her school Gmail for a response.

Summer Support Request

Repairing a Chromebook

After the online technical support form has been completed, if our team determines the Chromebook is in need of repair, it should be dropped off at the school’s main office.

A loaner Chromebook will be issued for use during the school day until the device is returned. If the cause of the repair is malicious or intentional, the school may refuse to provide a temporary device.

Repaired Chromebooks will be reset to factory default. Students should keep their data synced to Google Drive to ensure that class projects are not lost. The technical support team is unable to restore data saved to the device.

Families participating in the Technology Protection Plan are responsible for the cost of the deductible. Families who do not purchase the yearly Technology Protection Plan, will be responsible for the cost of the repair. If the repair is due to hardware failure, the District will repair the device at no cost.

Chromebook Repair Costs

Repair and replacement of Chromebooks or accessories are the family’s responsibility and must be paid to the district at the time the repair is completed.

The Technology Protection Plan is $20. This nonrefundable purchase is in effect from July 1 to June 30. Families may renew their participation in the Technology Protection Plan every spring for continued coverage into the next school year.

The Technology Protection Plan does not cover:

Students that exit the District prior to graduation must return the Chromebook and accessories. Students that transfer to VLAC or Grad Alliance must also return their Chromebook and accessories as these programs will provide the digital tools needed to participate in those programs.
